Roscoe Mitchell - Alto, Tenor, B♭ Soprano sax
Spencer Barefield - Guitar
Muhal Richard Abrams - Piano
George Lewis - Trombone

Recorded in concert at A Space, Toronto on the 4th and 5th of October 1975.

From the middle of 1970s, each member of Art Ensemble of Chicago (AEOC) started their own activities, as well as AEOC. Lester Bowie and Malachai Favors played music of combining Afro-American root music and free improvisation. Joseph Jarman and Don Moye seeked way to synthesize African ethnic music and improvisation music. The way of Roscoe Mitchell was the more avand-garde manners. He started quest from solo play with his ability as multi-reeds player in music of abstract and modern tastes. Different from other four collegues, his music at that time has very little taste of African or Afro-American.

This live album, issued by Sackville on 1975, is one of the typical ones. The music created by Roscoe and other three musicians is unique which not everyone can accept. But once attracted, this have very strong bind.

This is the final of series of JCOA with solo leader. This time, leader is Leroy Jenkins.

Sounds like middle period of Stravinsky's orchestral music. Very skillful, taste of modern classic music, rather than jazz.

Side B is series of solos by each instrument and player. This is very unique.

Barre Phillips -Journal Violone (1968)

Track:
A Journal Violone Part One
B Journal Violone Part Two

Contrabass - Barre Phillips

Recorded in London during November of 1968. The recording was made in the Parish Church of St. James' Norlands.

Young Barre Phillips plays lika "a pioneer of free improvisation by wood-base" here. He trys various aspects of wood-base as "sound maker", as well as musical imagination.

Michel Doneda - Anatomie des Clefs

MICHEL DONEDA - Anatomie des clefs (Potlatch, 1998)

Michel Doneda: soprano saxophone

01-Creux actif
02-Bloc d'air
03-Portées, divisées

At first blush, more than an hour of solo soprano saxophone might appear daunting, if not tedious. In Michel Doneda's hands, the soprano saxophone is not so much a musical instrument as a vessel of prayer. There is no discernable melody and few sounds that resemble those of the saxophone. Instead, there are incredible, even astounding sounds that melt into nothingness and then erupt in fury. The three tracks are entirely different, with utterly fascinating shadings. Under Doneda's tutelage, breath and space are just as important as instrumental sound. This is not, though, some New Age mush: Far from it. It is a masterful blend of noise, air, and technically sophisticated saxophone that unites to form a coherent whole. To the uninitiated, this might make for disturbing listening; but, but for those willing to take the time, the rewards are substantial.(from AMG)

Wade Matthews - Absent Friends

WADE MATTHEWS - Absent Friends (Sillon, 2005)

Wade Matthews: electronics

After the Doneda and Rombolá outings on Sillón reviewed in these pages last month, you might be forgiven for expecting more of Wade Matthews' work on bass clarinet and flute (especially if you're familiar with his two Creative Sources releases Aspirations & Inspirations and Dining Room Music), but no: Absent Friends is subtitled "Seven Electronic Improvisations" and finds the French-born American improviser using Reaktor software to turn a G4 Powerbook into a virtual analog synthesizer. For the benefit of trainspotters his setup consists of "four audible multiple wave oscillators, a white noise generator with dedicated two-pole resonating filter, three low-frequency oscillators (which can control amplitude, frequency and/or filter depth, cut-off, etc.) a main filter that can be controlled by the LFOs, a bunch of secondary filters and a four-oscillator chorus unit." So now you know. It's not surprising that Matthews goes into detail here, as he studied electronic music with Mario Davidovsky at the mythic Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, where his doctoral dissertation consisted of three pieces for improvisers guided by electronic sounds. "I'm not a woodwind improviser who's just moved into electronics because they’re 'in' right now. My electronic experience goes back almost a quarter of a century," he points out.
These seven tracks come from a set of 19 real time improvisations Matthews recorded while on holiday in France last summer. "I built a 'patch', just as I would with an analog synthesizer, then began to play it, listening to its character and altering its parameters as I went along. I can honestly say it was the easiest recording experience I’ve ever had," he admits. Though the pieces may have emerged in a spate of activity, it's clear he's spent long hours fine-tuning his equipment and perfecting his individual sounds. And despite all the technical info above, this is by no means arid, cerebral music: it's at times vibrant, thrilling, haunting, moving, even disturbing – but consistently impressive. More of Matthews' electronic work is scheduled for release shortly on Creative Sources, in the form of a duo project Mørske-Lys with Ingar Zach. If it's as good as this I can't wait to hear it.–DW

Masayoshi Urabe - Solo

MASAYOSHI URABE - Solo (PSF, 1996)

Masayoshi Urabe: alto saxophone

01-solo

01-Worshippers Come Nigh

06-Newsstand (Take 1)

Tenorman Charles Brackeen's third of three Silkheart CDs (recorded at the same session as Attainment) matches his powerful playing with cornetist Olu Dara, bassist Fred Hopkins, and drummer Andrew Cyrille. All of the Silkheart sets are worth picking up, but this one (due to its extra intensity and the five particularly strong Brackeen originals) gets a slight edge. Brackeen's passionate playing shows that free jazz was still very much alive (if underground) in the 1980s.(from AMG)

Tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen is in ways a throwback to the 1960s. He sometimes builds off of childlike folk themes (like Albert Ayler), and Ornette Coleman's method of constantly improvising new melodies is also an influence. However, Brackeen's intense sound has a soul of its own, and his playing on the four lengthy originals (with strong contributions by bassist Fred Hopkins, drumer Andrew Cyrille and the underrated cornetist Olu Dara) is quite original. Intense yet fulfilling music which was recorded the same day as its companion album, Worshippers Come Nigh.(from AMG)

This vinyl issed on 1975 is recorded live at the first presentation of a Modern Day Black Opera :
"Africa Is Calling Me", performed at the Center American for Students and Artists in Paris, France on May 25, 1974.

And, by the producer of this vinyl was inspired by this opera, and he adopted five scenes, and made this album.

Bob Reid is bassist. He played with Archie Shepp, Francois Tuesques at the begining of 1970s.

In this album, I think, players known are himself and Oliver Lake only. Others are
not known.

Spirituality filled up in this opera calling for freedom to not only black people but also for all human races expresses political atomosphere of the time this music was perforemed.

This is re-issuance of vinyl of 1968 in 1995 with unissued trucks.

Dave Burrell plays rather normal style which includes free taste in limited level. But young Noris Jones (Sirone) seems to try to play in free style so that he can take Dave's piano and music into new and advanced style at that time.

Happeining of such inbalance plays between session members and tensions generated by such is one of interests of Jazz music, I guess.

This is valuable record of young days of Joe McPhee. Live recording of Joe McPhee & Survival unit II on 1971. One year before, Joe issued two important albums of his early
days, namely “Nation Time” and “Black Magic Man”.

I have no idea about Survival unit I, when this existed, consisted of who, any recording has been issued, sold in vinyl’s, CDs. Though I researched on web, I could not find out Information.

Anyway, it is interesting for funs of Joe McPhee to know that, after one year of issuance of important works in his early days, how “Survival Unit II” was as jazz combo, and what kind of music they generated.

In this album, first three titles are more or less typical free jazz tunes of that time. And the later three titles have new and experimental elements, which lead to Joe’s music of later years.

Credit for Percussion on Side C actually says 'Cyrille Few and his friend'

This is Steve Lacy's album of Hat Hut in 1980s. This is rather big work in two vinyls. Although I do not think this is very innovative or very new work in Steve Lacy's various opus, very gay, easy to listen (even non free jazz music lover would love this), but various aspects of Steve's music are picked up and shown like“Prospectus.

And I admire excellence of George Lewis as trombone player. As a music creator and composer, I am not so fond of his abstract, well-calculated and experimental style of works, which takes similar style of Roscoe Mitchel but not as vital as him, and sounds like a certain kind of modern classic music. Difficult to imagine what is called "Jazz music". But, as trombone player, he has nice tone and bright phrases with unbelievable virtuous technical.

This file is converted from casset tape. I think sound quality is affordable for enjoying in ordinal level music player.

Recorded 1970 in Paris.

This is the album of Frank Wright as leader. But all titels are written by Noah Howard. Frank Wright, Noah Howard and Bobby Few recorded others such as Church Number 9, One for John. But, both have Muhamed Ali as drumer. But in this album, Art Taylor partipates. I think it is rare that Art Taylor played in free jazz work. Not bad play, I guess.

The first title "Orient Mood" has same theme of "Mt Fuji" in Howard's work "Black Ark" recorded in1969. Accordting to my friend studying Japanese music, the pentatonic scale of this theme is not used in traditional music of Japan.
This is rather Chinese music, he said.

4 3 Phasis 11:55
5 3 Phasis 13:06

personnel :
Piano - Cecil Taylor
Alto Saxophone - Jimmy Lyons
Trumpet - Raphe Malik
Violin - Ramsey Ameen
Bass - Sirone
Drums - Ronald Shannon Jackson

Engineer - Don Puluse
Producer - Sam Parkins

Recorded at April 1978.

Together with "Cecil Tylor unit 1978" and "Live at Black Forest", this "3 Phasis"
were recorded by Cecil Taylor Unit of 1978.
Since Alan Silva left the unit in 1966, Cecil Taylor unit had been in principle without bass.
And in this unit, combination of bass of Sirone (who once joined with Cecil in "Spring of two blue-J's in 1973) and
drums of Ronald Shannon Jackson generates different rhythm groove from Alan Silva and Andrew Cyrille.

This is happy and vital music with good balance of cool inteligence and free jazz energy.
I guess, Carlos Ward should be taken more attention.

Souce of this is cassett tape, recording the noisy vinyl. So sound quality is not satisfactory. Sorry for this.

Cecil Taylor - Live In The Black Forest (1978)

Cecil Taylor - Live In The Black Forest (1978)

Track list
A The Eel Pot 24:57
B Sperichill On Calling 25:08

Personnels:
Piano, Written-By - Cecil Taylor
Bass - Sirone
Drums - Ron Jackson
Saxophone [Alto] - Jimmy Lyons
Trumpet - Raphe Malik
Violin - Ramsey Ameen

Recorded live on 3 June 1978 in SWF-Radio Jazz Concert in Kirchzarten, Black Forest, West Germany.

This is one of four records of Cecil Taylor Unit of six personel in 1978 year. Live recording.
Cecil Taylor unit would remind us of Unit Structure and Conquistdor in 1966 year. Good mixture and balance of composed parts and free improvisation parts are similar to both units. On the other hand, passing of twelve years and different members (only Jimmy Lyons and Cecil Taylor himself are same personnels in both units) bring about changes in characteristics of music.

This is converted from casset tape into mp3. I think quality is enough to introduce this wonderful music, though not ideal.

Written By - Luther Thomas

Reissue Producer - John Corbett

I think this is very rare item of Human Arts Ensemble. Luther Thomas takes leader initiative. But different from
"Funkey Donkey", this is more abstract form than funk music.

Human Arts Ensemble starts in AACM style performance in begining time. Then their style change in soul & funk music.
I think this is interesting record to show their way to change, though quality of music would not be high enough their other issued albums.

This is wonderful work in spacy and spiritual atmosphere. As far as I know, this album has not been re-issued. I have no idea why this kind of high quality and has been in such status for years.

Hoping more music fun will find out this and know which would lead to re-issuance of such unique and valuable record of human art.

Download and Share

This week, I talked to Eddie Prevost of free downloading and its consequences on the share and the development of improvised and experimental music. Here is resumed his (and my) position and reflexions about it.

I don't think that to download for free is truly a problem for labels, even less for the artists, if we have a conscientious use of the download. This kind of music is already rather elitist at the cultural level, no need to be also financially elitist. Most of the people must have a free access to all musics (and arts), our love for music can't be stopped by monetary reasons, I don't argue that.

However, sharing music is (or should...) also the only and main purpose of the labels. Thus, the only means to help this music is supporting the involving labels which are inevitably within a capitalist society, a few people pay for pressing, printing and releasing  these discs that they share for we.

Most of the labels concerned with the experimental and free music are  not market driven. However, they have to co-exist within a capitalist economy and society. My guess is our more thoughtful audience understand this situation. My feeling is that one way they know they can support the music is by making purchases of the CDs we produce.

As much as we would like to make this music freely available — and many of the musicians concerned play most of their live music in non-profit making environments — we need the audience and those who share our philosophy to engage with us in many ways. One way is to help us maintain some kind of programme of releases to help nurture and propagate this music. Whether we like it or not this can only be done —  at the moment — by making CDs and other recordings within the industrial/commercial capitalist context. Pressing plants, printers, shipping/postal agencies and the like will not do their work for free.
Downloading for free as common creative licences are OK, but we have to support the creation and the diffusion of material or numerical stuffs as much as possible, what is the better and larger way for the evolution of this music. In fact, there are two ways, we CONSUME or not. If I choose to consume music, there are no sufficient (ideological and political in particular) reasons to justify HOW I consume because when I check a disc out, I accept its mode of production. Even if I hate money and work, the records which I like are creating within a working and financier capitalist society, because labels can't be outside that wether they want it or not.

Without getting some return on the costs of recording — which are achieved mostly through sales of CDs to people interested in the music — then there are no resources to make more music available. Thus the people interested in this marginal music will have fewer opportunities to hear this stuff. Freedom from copyright is a good aim. However, in the present circumstances your actions (and people like you) are in effect closing down the dissemination of this music and restricting the wider discourse of meaning  — which ironically involves ultimate free access and exchange!
